FMCSA’s New Motus System Is Coming: Are You Ready?

FMCSA’s New Motus System Is Coming: Are You Ready?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is preparing to launch its long-awaited registration platform, Motus, and the clock is ticking for motor carriers, brokers, and logistics companies to get ready.

This new system represents a major shift in how registration and compliance processes are handled in the trucking industry. With a key preparation deadline of May 14, companies that operate under a USDOT Number or have operating authority need to act now to avoid disruptions.

What is Motus and why does it matter

Motus is FMCSA’s next-generation registration system designed to replace multiple legacy platforms and unify them into a single, streamlined interface. The goal is simple: make registration easier, reduce fraud, and improve overall user experience.

Currently, businesses rely on several systems, including the Unified Registration System (URS), the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS), and older licensing tools. With Motus, all of these will be consolidated into one centralized platform.

This transition is part of a broader modernization effort aimed at improving efficiency and transparency across the transportation industry.

Key Deadline: May 14

FMCSA has issued a bulletin urging all regulated entities to complete several critical steps before May 14. Missing this deadline could lead to account access issues or delays in managing your registration.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Activate Your FMCSA Portal Account

First and foremost, make sure your FMCSA Portal account is active. If you haven’t logged in recently, now is the time.

Accounts are:

  • Disabled after 90 days of inactivity
  • Archived after 12 months

If your account is inactive, you’ll need to contact FMCSA’s support center to restore access. Without an active account, you won’t be able to transition smoothly into Motus.

2. Obtain or Verify Your USDOT PIN

Your USDOT PIN is essential for accessing and managing your company’s data. If you don’t have it or can’t locate it, request it directly through FMCSA.

This PIN will be required to:

  • Access your company profile
  • Link your account to Motus
  • Make future updates

3. Review and Verify Company Information

Before the new system goes live, double-check that all your company details are accurate.

This includes:

  • Business name and address
  • Operation classification
  • Contact information
  • Authorized users

Incorrect or outdated information could cause complications once Motus becomes the primary system.

4. Submit Your Biennial Update (MCS-150)

Even if your update isn’t due yet, FMCSA strongly recommends submitting your MCS-150 form now through the portal.

This ensures:

  • Your data is current
  • You avoid compliance issues
  • Your transition to Motus is seamless

5. Prepare for Account Linking in Motus

When Motus officially launches, only the designated Company Official—using the same Login.gov email tied to the FMCSA Portal—will be able to claim and link the account.

Once linked:

  • You will no longer need the old FMCSA Portal for registration changes
  • All updates will be handled directly in Motus

Motus Rollout Timeline

FMCSA has been rolling out Motus in phases. The first phase began in December 2025, and the second phase—expected in Q2 2026—will make the system available to all regulated entities.

At that point, older systems will begin to be phased out, marking a full transition to the new platform.

Why This Transition Is Important

Motus isn’t just another update—it’s a fundamental change in how regulatory compliance is managed.

Benefits include:

  • Faster and more intuitive registration processes
  • Improved fraud detection and prevention
  • Centralized access to all registration-related services
  • Reduced administrative burden

For carriers and logistics companies, this means less time navigating complex systems and more time focusing on operations.

Final Thoughts

The launch of Motus signals a new era for FMCSA registration and compliance. While the changes are designed to simplify processes, preparation is key.

By taking action now—activating your account, verifying your information, and submitting updates—you can ensure a smooth transition and avoid unnecessary complications.

If your business relies on a USDOT Number, don’t wait until the last minute. The May 14 deadline is fast approaching, and being proactive today will save you time and stress tomorrow.
