New House Resolution Highlights Safe Driving Around Trucks and Supports FMCSA Safety Campaign

Congress Renews Focus on Highway Safety Around Commercial Trucks

Road safety remains one of the most important priorities for the trucking industry, and lawmakers in Washington are once again emphasizing the importance of educating all drivers on how to safely share the road with large commercial vehicles.

A bipartisan group of members of Congress recently introduced a resolution recognizing May 31 through June 6, 2026, as “Our Roads, Our Safety Week.” The initiative is intended to strengthen public awareness and encourage safer driving habits among everyone who uses America’s highways.

Although the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is responsible for regulating commercial motor carriers, its long-running “Our Roads, Our Safety” campaign focuses on educating passenger vehicle drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and professional truck drivers alike. The goal is simple: reduce crashes and save lives through better awareness and shared responsibility.

Representatives Dave Taylor of Ohio and Shomari Figures of Alabama introduced the resolution with support from several members of the Congressional Trucking Caucus. According to lawmakers, the efficient movement of goods and people is essential to the U.S. economy, making roadway safety a responsibility shared by everyone.

The resolution highlights that public education campaigns play an important role in lowering traffic fatalities and promoting safer interactions between commercial trucks and other vehicles. Supporters believe that improving awareness among motorists can help prevent avoidable accidents and make highways safer for families and professional drivers.

Representative Taylor emphasized that protecting American families should remain a top priority. He noted that with billions of tons of freight moving across the country each year, cooperation among truck drivers, passenger vehicle operators, cyclists, and pedestrians is critical to maintaining safe roadways.

The proposal also encourages the FMCSA to continue investing in outreach and educational efforts designed to improve driver awareness and promote best practices when sharing the road with large trucks and buses.

Industry organizations have welcomed the initiative. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) expressed strong support for the campaign, emphasizing that professional truck drivers spend more time on the road than anyone and understand the importance of highway safety. OOIDA leaders praised lawmakers for recognizing the value of educational programs that help all motorists better understand how to safely interact with commercial vehicles.

The “Our Roads, Our Safety” campaign has been active for nearly a decade. Originally launched by the FMCSA in 2016 under the name “Our Roads, Our Responsibility,” the initiative later evolved into its current form and has continued to receive support from trucking organizations and safety advocates throughout the industry.

As freight demand continues to grow and millions of motorists travel America’s highways every day, industry leaders and policymakers agree on one message: road safety is a shared responsibility. Through continued education and cooperation, everyone can help make the nation’s roads safer for truck drivers and the traveling public.
